Empowered #PatientChat with Flip the Clinic

May 1, 2015 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am

A Conversation with My Doctor

You’re Invited!

Join us this Friday 5/1 for our bi-weekly Empowered #PatientChat on twitter. This week we are excited to be joined by Flip the Clinic.

Flip the Clinic is a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation project to re-imagine the medical encounter between patients and care providers. Flip the Clinic brings everyone together, both online and in person, to design new tools and share existing strategies aimed at getting more out of the health care interaction. Central to this process are “Flips”—bold new ways of looking at the relationships in health care—to create meaningful changes and inspire things that will work, even inside what is widely recognized as a broken health care system. Flip the Clinic seeks to fundamentally shift the clinical encounter experience in the United States through a community-driven reimagining of the relationships in health care. “Flips” involve everyone who has a stake in the relationship, people from across the system: patients, nurses, physicians, technicians, teachers, carers, and administrators.

“Flip the Clinic is creating the possibility of a new system,” says surgeon, public health researcher, and writer Atul Gawande. “It’s creating a critical moment next to the twenty-minute office visit that can be incredibly powerful for the delivery of health care and health.”

The average primary care doctor has more than 2,300 patients, and patient-clinician encounters are too often cursory (the infamous 15-minute median office visit) and infrequent. Consequently, appointments are a high-cost, high-resource encounter with surprisingly limited value. Under these circumstances, how can these visits be made both more effective and more satisfying?

Chat Topics:

  • What is the Flip the Clinic project? What is a “flip”?
  • Let’s dream big about improving the doctor-patient relationship.
  • What are some “distracting assumptions” that impede good doctor-patient communication? What are tools to start more open/improved conversations?
  • How could your doctor’s office better help you address common illness-related problems?
  • How can empowered patients get involved with Flip the Clinic?

See you this Friday 5/3 on Twitter (or tchat.io/rooms/patientchat) at 10:00 am Pacific / 1:00 pm Eastern. Be sure to include the hashtag #patientchat in all your responses! Click HERE to learn more about our Empowered #PatientChat Series and how to participate.
