Empowered #patientchat: Using Technology for Emotional Support, with CanSurround

February 19, 2016 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am

You’re Invited!

Join us Friday 2/19 for our bi-weekly Empowered #patientchat on twitter. It was great hearing about the work of CanSurround at the Stanford Medicine X Conference last fall and we are thrilled to have them join us for a discussion on reducing stress, building resilience, and creating well-being while facing serious illness.

Guiding our discussion will be the following topic questions:

T1: What is @CanSurround and who can benefit from it? What sparked this project?
T2: What is “resilience” and how can we nurture and grow that trait?
T3: Have you spoken w/ your doctor about stress and the emotional impacts of your health condition? Why or why not?
T4: How has the current healthcare system met (or not met) your needs for emotional health and support?
T5a: Do you think a tech-based solution can be helpful in delivering emotional support? Why or why not?
T5b: What do you think might be drawbacks to using a tech-based solution for emotional support?

Meet Our Guests:

@CanSurround – CanSurround Advisor and frequent #patientchat participant, Liza Bernstein (@itsthebunk), will be tweeting from the CanSurround account for this chat. After emerging from three separate cancer diagnoses over the course of 22 years, Liza Bernstein has woven her life and professional experiences into a multifaceted career in human/patient-centered design, digital health and advocacy. A former member of the Stanford Medicine X Executive Board, Liza is also an advisor to the Fresh Chapter Alliance Foundation.

@MegaMaley – CanSurround CEO and Co-Founder, Meg Maley, RN, BSN, has devoted her 28-year career to improving the lives of people living with cancer. She has founded, grown and sold oncology health care companies and also spent several years in the #mHealth space as an executive with WellDoc Inc. The theme of Meg’s professional life has been to ease people’s pain and suffering. She derives a great personal satisfaction from helping people through intensely difficult chapters in their lives and guiding them to find meaning and growth from the experiences.

As the winner of the 2015 Doctors 2.0 & You Startup Contest, CanSurround was awarded the honor of addressing the 2015 Stanford Medicine X plenary audience. See Meg Maley’s informative and emotional talk here.

About CanSurround:

CanSurround Logo

The emotional ride through the cancer journey can often be rough. CanSurround is here to help.

CanSurround is a personalized, comprehensive, web and mobile emotional support system for people living with cancer. We are solely focused on reducing needless distress and creating emotional well-being for those we serve. Uniquely positioned at the intersection of healthcare, technology and entertainment, we strive to reach, engage and help people through a creative, multimedia, technology-enabled platform.

The CanSurround team estimates that for every person diagnosed with cancer, at least five additional lives are affected by the disease. Because cancer’s influence is far reaching, CanSurround serves all whose lives are changed by cancer—patient, family, friends, and co-workers.

Considering all phases of the cancer journey—diagnosis, treatment and survivorship—we provide information and inspiration to guide participants toward choices that foster personal growth and healing. By building a trusted relationship with all users, CanSurround helps them to gain confidence, better steer their way through the cancer experience and let go of some of their fear and worry. Peace is our purpose.
